Founded July 25, 1797

This is the sixteenth mission. The walls were and ceilings were painted by Indians and the original murals are some of the best preserved in California. There was no bell tower. Instead, the bell rang from a wooden platform. Today, it sits on it's own nearby campanario and is still in use. In contrast to many other missions, San Miguel Arcángel has an unusual cactus carden.
